Georgina Hetley: Botanical wonderings

Be inspired by the watercolours of early botanical artist, Georgina Hetley. During the 1880s she was commissioned to capture the beauty and scientific details of Aotearoa’s diverse botanical treasures. Georgina travelled independently throughout ngā motu sketching and painting for her publication, “The Native Flowers of New Zealand”. Ākonga will sharpen their drawing skills and have some unpredictable fun using different watercolour techniques to create an assemblage of favourite flora, while learning about the medicinal qualities of these native plants.

The education programme

Based in the museum classroom, your students will:

• Visit the Georgina Hetley exhibition and sketch a range of native plants

• Learn about the medicinal qualities of some native plants

• Practice watercolour techniques to create their own art piece
