Waka Huia

From one large treasure box to many small ones, ākonga get a close-up look at traditional waka huia, hue and treasure boxes from the MTG collection. They will learn about the cultural significance and design elements of waka huia and visit the exhibition Kuru Taonga to view local contemporary Māori artists work.  This will be used to develop visual diaries and their own art-making.  

This programme is being introduced in 2023 to give teachers and students time to prepare for the new Visual Arts curriculum.

Suitable for: Year 11, maximum 30 students

The education programme

Based in the museum classroom, your students will:

• View a variety of waka huia, hue and other treasure boxes

• Examine the patterning and design elements of these boxes and create sketches  

• Visit our Kuru Taonga gallery to look at further artwork from local contemporary artists
