Hawke’s Bay Museum Trust Collection Highlights

Our collections fall into a number of collecting departments:

  • The Archive holds material documenting Hawke’s Bay and New Zealand history.
  • Decorative Arts includes a strong emphasis on 20th Century New Zealand artists.
  • Fine Arts includes paintings, works on paper and sculpture and includes early New Zealand modernism 1925-1950 and New Zealand painting 1970- 1990.
  • The Natural History Collection has important moa material and a small collection of fern samples relating to William Colenso.
  • The Social History Collection relates to people, events and organisations of Hawke’s Bay and New Zealand.
  • The Taonga Māori Collection contains diverse taonga from the Hawke’s Bay and wider New Zealand.
  • The Costume and Textile Collection has holdings of costume and garments dating from the 18th century through to the late 20th century.
  • The Pacific and World Cultures Collection has objects from Pacific nations and societies such as ancient Egypt, ancient Rome, Native American people, Africa and Asia.
