Art Deco Textiles

The Costume & Textile collection holds a wealth of excellent relics of Art Deco fashion from the 1920s and 1930s. Highlighted in this image gallery are ten dresses that feature beautifully beaded designs and exude the elegance and sophistication of the women who wore them.

Art Deco Textiles Collection

One dress was bought in 1927 as a wedding dress (90/33) and dyed red after the nuptials so it could be worn all over again. Other examples include dresses made in France from silk georgette and a selection of dresses embellished with glass bugle beads, metallic sequins and fringing.

Many of these dresses are constructed from sheer fabric such as netting or georgette with detailed beaded designs. Dresses such as these were intended to be worn with a slip underneath, or with matching jackets and hats. Explore the online gallery and take a step back in time to an era where the glitz and glamour of Art Deco was at its height.
