Kuru Taonga: Voices of Kahungunu

This exhibition shows a history of people and places of Ngāti Kahungunu, telling stories of their time and the events that shaped Te Matau-a-Māui into the region of Hawke’s Bay, events that also helped to shape Aotearoa into New Zealand.

Kahungunu was a peaceful man, a producer, provider, protector and diplomat. Through his marriages to several high-ranking rangatira wāhine, he established links from Kaitaia in the far north and around the east coast from Ōpotiki to Māhia.
