Positive progress on remedial building work

rsz img 3039The Century Theatre at MTG Hawke’s Bay has reopened today after the successful completion of remedial works to fix the sprinkler system within the theatre. This is part of broader remedial works being undertaken to fix the sprinkler system across the entire MTG Hawke’s Bay building.

The reopening of the Century Theatre is in time for a planned United Nations International Holocaust Remembrance Day event taking place at the theatre on the evening of Wednesday 27th January.

From Monday 1st February, the foyer area of the Century Theatre will be used as a pop-up retail space for the museum. The shop will be open from 9:30 – 5:00 seven days a week. The Century Theatre foyer will also serve as a drop-off point for library users to collect reserved items and drop off returns. Staff will be on site to assist library customers.

The remaining parts of the building, where the museum and library are located, will remain closed for the time being as remedial work is carried out concurrently in both areas. The project team is targeting the publicly accessible parts of the building first, to ensure the library and museum can open as soon as possible. We are currently anticipating that public areas of the library  will be open by the end of March or early April.  It’s important to note that work on the rooms occupied by museum exhibits is likely to take longer than the work needed in the library, due to the confined working spaces and amount of scaffolding required. Additionally, extra time is needed for museum exhibits to be removed and then reinstalled after works have finished.

Work will continue until mid-2021 on areas of the building that are not accessible to the public. Museum and library customers will need to be aware that there will be noise and disruption as work continues in the non-public areas of the building.

We will keep you updated as the project progresses.
