EQ Family leaving town BannerThis programme is levelled for different ages and uses a variety of delivery techniques and resources.

For Years 1-4:

  • The Day that Rocked Thomas's World: A Kamishibai theatre box (a unique storytelling technique) will be used to tell students a story about Thomas, a young child caught up in the 1931 earthquake. On visiting the exhibition, students will search for special objects featured in the story, and investigate what happened to people and buildings in the earthquake. Back in the education suite they will practice, in a fun way, how to keep themselves safe in a big shake.

For Years 4-8:

  • Quake '31 - Resilience / Citizenship / Our Place: Let us know your teaching focus so we can tailor a programme based on the events, causes and consequences of the 1931 earthquake especially for your class.
  • Breaking News!: Students will travel back in time to the day of the 1931 earthquake - luckily with iPads so they can record the dramatic events as they unfold. MTG's education classroom will double as a busy TV newsroom, complete with iPads and a greenscreen. Drawing on images and stories in the museum's earthquake exhibition and archives, students will work in groups to research, plan and record a series of news stories that can be edited back at school into a full news report featuring 'live' coverage of the earthquake 'as it happens'.

Alternatively, book our standard programme: After a short participatory drama, students hear stories of the heroism and determination of ordinary people caught up in a catastrophic situation. A visit to the exhibition and an interactive game highlight the need for preparedness and resourcefulness in difficult times.
