Napier Cemetery Walk and Talk

Take a journey of discovery through Hawke’s Bay’s past with a guided walk through this historic cemetery. You will hear gripping stories of the eventful lives and deaths of local people, touching on missionary work, the New Zealand wars, maritime disasters, the coming of the railways, 19th century burial practices and headstone symbols. This programme is ideal for all schools exploring local history. We also recommend it for schools visiting Napier on school camp.

Duration: 1.5 hours

Suitable for: Year 4 - 13

Availability: Term 1 & 4

Cost: $2.50 per student (Primary), $4.50 per student (Secondary)

The education programme

This is a guided tour, your students will:

  • hear stories about significant community leaders (Rev. William Colenso, the McLean family, the Williams family, Sir George Whitmore) as well as those less well known but who had interesting lives, and/or tragic stories related to their death.

  • Get an insight into life and death in the period 1855 - 1917.

** Please note that this tour takes place at the Napier Cemetery. The educator will meet your group at the Cemetery gates.
