Mataruahou Hikoi

Mataruahou is the original name for Scinde Island, or the Napier Hill. On this hikoi, students will explore the local history of Te Matau a Maui (Hawke’s Bay) while taking a walk up to the Bluff Hill Lookout. Taking in the views, the guide book will assist with locating significant pā sites, landmarks and other geographical features, discovering the stories and events that took place in these areas.

Suitable for: Year 7-13

Availability: Term 1 and Term 4

Cost (per student): $2.50 primary, $4.50 secondary

This is a semi-guided tour, your students will:

  • Begin at the MTG for a brief introduction to the Mataruahou hikoi and pre-Kahungunu history
  • Make their way up to the Bluff Hill Lookout, stopping along the way to locate sites of significance.
  • Meet educators at the lookout to hear more local pūrākau and point out sites of significance across Hawke's Bay.
