Māori Migration to Aotearoa

Where did Māori come from? How did they travel to Aotearoa? During this session children will learn about early Māori arrival to Aotearoa 700 years ago. As part of this session we will visit the Kuru Taonga: Voices of Kahungunu exhibition. The visit concludes with an art activity.

Learning Areas and Strands: Aotearoa NZ Histories

Duration: 1.5 hours

Suitable for: Year 3 - 6, maximum 30 students

Availability: Begins Term 2, 2023. Ongoing.

Cost: $2.50 per student

Based in the museum classroom, your students will:

  • Explore where Māori came from, and the different waka they used.
  • Learn about early navigational methods and how they are different today
  • View our Kuru Taonga exhibition and return to the classroom to complete an art activity
