For the people of Hawke's Bay, life changed forever when the earthquake struck on 3 February 1931. Discover what happened and how people coped by exploring the evidence of objects, personal stories and photos in MTG’s 1931 Earthquake exhibition.
|Years||Years 1 - 8|
|Cost||$2.50 per student; free for accompanying adults|
|Venue||MTG Hawke's Bay|
|Learning Areas||Social Sciences|
This programme is levelled for different ages and uses a variety of delivery techniques and resources.
For Years 1-4:
Students will hear a story about Thomas, a young child caught up in the dramatic events of the day, using a unique storytelling technique. On visiting the exhibition they will search for special objects mentioned in the story, and learn what happened to people and buildings in the earthquake. Back in the education suite they will practice, in a fun way, what to do in a big shake.
For Years 5-8:
Students will hear about the disastrous day of the earthquake, before visiting the exhibition to learn some of the special stories behind the items on display. Returning to the education suite, they will improvise brief drama scenes based on photographs taken during the hours immediately after the quake. If there is time, they will practice earthquake drills.
