The story of Pānia is a Napier story which not only explains a very famous landmark, the Pānia Reef, but also tells us much about the times and beliefs held in traditional Māori society. Our taonga exhibition, Tēnei Tonu, offers a chance to view real objects from this time, such as waka (canoes) and hoe (paddles), and to understand cultural beliefs and an earlier way of life.
The education programme includes a retelling of Pānia's story, student exploration of the Tēnei Tonu exhibition, waiata and karakia, the laying of a mauri stone and a follow-up craft activity back in the classroom.
