Through hands-on exploration of the Faraday Centre's historical technologies, students can investigate physical phenomena such as forces, motion, electricty and magnetism, or explore technological applications of physics concepts.

Ask our educators for a programme tailored to your Physical World focus, or arrange a teachers' pre-visit to the Faraday Centre so you can plan your own class visit.

Examples of things to do at the Faraday Centre related to forces, motion and mechanisms:

  • Use pulleys, gears and levers to magnify or change the speed or direction of a force in machines such as mangles, washing machines, boot polishers and a railway jigger
  • Ride the 4-person bike to drive a huge, windy fan
  • Send a note across the museum via catapult/flying fox
  • Test your super-human strength in a pulley-aided tug-of-war
  • Defy gravity with a Bernoulli experiment
  • Experiment with compression and tension forces in a bridge-building challenge

Examples of things to do at the Faraday Centre related to electricity and electromagnetic technologies:

  • See a Tesla coil in action
  • Use a Van de Graaff static electricity generator to shock your classmates
  • Tap out a message in Morse code on a spark radio transmitter
  • Use a Wimshurst machine to produce a spark
  • Find out about the mighty Fullagar engine and how it powered generators in Napier's Power House (now the Faraday Centre) last century
  • Operate a manual telephone exchange; call a classmate on the dial or crank-handle telephones
  • Use water, light or magnets to generate electricty

Resources are also available at the Faraday Centre for student investigations into light, sound and other physical phenomena.
