Homes and livelihoods were destroyed, and the impacts on the natural and urban environments were catastrophic. Discover what happened and how people coped by exploring the evidence in the objects, personal stories, archival material and photographs on display in the 1931 Hawke's Bay Earthquake exhibition.

This programme is levelled for different age groups and uses a variety of delivery techniques and resources, including first person accounts (filmed interviews, letters, etc), photographs and objects from our collection.

We can tailor this programme to your teaching of either history or geography for specific NCEA papers, or for inspiration in the arts curriculum. During the programme we focus on:

  • Causes and consequences geographically
  • Impacts on people – short and long term
  • World/New Zealand significant earthquakes
  • Relevance: How viewing the past helps us understand the present and future
  • Regional economic impacts of such events
