Community » Volunteers
The skills, knowledge and energy of our volunteers are a vital ingredient in all of the work we do and offers an interesting and worthwhile experience, and opportunity, to work with like-minded people interested in the art, history and culture of New Zealand.
We have volunteer opportunities across the institution and are particularly keen to recruit hosts to help us share our stories with visitors to the Hawke’s Bay Museum.
Some testimonials from a few of our current volunteers:
"I have been a volunteer for many years and enjoy being part of the Museum’s family. The staff have always made me feel like one of the team even though I only work a few hours every fortnight. I regard museums as being essential to preserving the history of a city and we have a wonderful building and collection in Napier that enables the staff to put on excellent displays. It is always a pleasure to walk around and view them when on duty. My regular duty is to be available in the upper galleries to answer questions and to help visitors get the most out of their viewings. They come from all over the world and I have had many very interesting conversations about the exhibitions with the visitors. I also help when extra staff are required for special events and large crowds are expected. I particularly like helping when the events bring in families as I enjoy the company of children."
"I am privileged to be a volunteer at MTG one morning each week. The staff provide a very warm welcome and excellent information to all the visitors and I feel very much a part of this positive team. Plus, by being included in floor talks and being at the MTG regularly I get an intimate knowledge of the wonderful exhibitions - in fact I find out something new every time I come! The MTG provides a great picture of our culture and community and the spirit and forces that have shaped it. I enjoy talking to visitors, and seeing their interest and response to the displays, and I even enjoy the more mundane tasks of helping out with repairing, cleaning and tidying."
1. The welcome from the staff every week ensures I feel I am worthwhile
2. The enthusiasm shown to the visitors by the staff is a model for the volunteer
3. If visitors wish to have a conversation this generally ends up with their 'story'. I wish I had recorded the many stories which have emerged from an exhibit which had facilitated the discussion
4. Now that admission is free volunteers are necessary when roaming to remind some people of appropriate behaviours
5. I always come home and think about something I have learnt. It is a privilege to be able to revisit exhibits & find more detail
6. Many people respond showing their appreciation with a word of thanks which is good for 'the soul'.
7. The common denominator is MTG, the enormous divergence of visitors is overwhelming, especially now it is free.
