MTG Hawke’s Bay is receiving a colourful boost to its Marine Parade facade. The installation of Pin Wall, a collaborative effort by award-winning artists Sara Hughes and Gregor Kregar, began this week.
The new addition to Napier’s public art on the Marine Parade side of MTG comprises 5000 glazed porcelain balls that project out from the building on stainless steel rods of different lengths, to create a 3D effect. Sara says by the time the work is complete it will take the form of a “brightly coloured oversized pin cushion”.
“We are thrilled to be creating this work for Napier and hope it will become a real landmark,” she says. The artists wanted to create a work inspired by the MTG collection. Pin Wall grew from their discovery of a group of 19th century pin cushions and the Avis Higgs fabric design archive. They were particularly taken with a textile print by Higgs depicting New Zealand flora and fauna, and turned it into a mosaic of colour. In Pin Wall, each pixel of colour is represented by a pin head. The pin was an expensive and rare item in the 19th century, commonplace in the 20th century, and is now used less and less due to the low cost and availability of readymade garments. MTG is recording the installation and plans to put a time lapse video of the work on display in the near future.
Sara Hughes is a renowned New Zealand artist, whose work is held in many collections throughout Australasia including Te Papa and the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. In 2005 she won both the Norsewear Art Award and Wallace Art Award, and in 2008 was the first NZ recipient of The RIPE: Art and Australia magazine Art Award. She has undertaken a range of high profile public commissions, including two large scale permanent works for the ANZ lobby in Auckland and a series of outdoor works for the re-opening of Cathedral Square in Christchurch.
Like Hughes Slovenian born Gregor Kregar is also a Wallace Art Award and Norsewear Art Award winner, in 2000 and 2004 respectively. His work in the Sculpture On The Gulf 2013 exhibition won both the Premier and People’s Choice awards that year. He has also completed many public art commissions. His work has appeared in shows all over the world and is held in collections in places including New York, Abu Dhabi and Auckland. The work was commissioned and funded as part of the overall MTG building project.
