Researchers, students and local historians will be delighted with the MTG Hawke’s Bay’s new online collections. You can view and search a catalogue of nearly 14,000 archive records and nearly 8000 historic photographs of Hawke’s Bay and beyond.
The archive is the largest collection held by the Hawke’s Bay Museums Trust and includes a range of items of national and regional significance including the William Colenso collection of letters, pamphlets and diaries, Hawke’s Bay earthquake records and the Whitmore Papers relating to the East Coast campaign of the New Zealand Wars.
The photograph collection contains an almost complete representation of the Hawke’s Bay region since the beginning of European settlement. The earliest photograph in the collection is a daguerreotype portrait of missionary and botanist, William Colenso by John Crombie. It is one of the earliest dated daguerreotypes in New Zealand.
This online collection focuses on pre-1944 photographs including the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake and more recent images from the Daily Telegraph collection.
When MTG opens visitors to MTG Hawke’s Bay will be able to view the archives in the Bernard Chambers Reading Room and order digital copies of the photographs there or online.
