MTG Hawke’s Bay is a finalist in not one but two awards, covering three of its current exhibitions.
A combined entry for two exhibitions, Indra’s Bow and A Glimpse Of India, has been selected as a finalist in the sub-category of Best Installation or Temporary Structure (for exhibitions, installations, studios, stage sets) in the Spatial Design category of the 2017 Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Design Awards.
MTG staff have worked in collaboration with artists Tiffany Singh and Jo Blogg to create an immersive and sensory art installation in Indra’s Bow, says James Price, MTG’s Exhibitions & Facilities Coordinator. “Indra’s Bow, along with the adjoining collection based exhibition A Glimpse of India, evoke a sense of India through architectural detailing and bold use of colour. They are both excellent examples of how design can completely transform a space.”
The awards are highly regarded in the design industry and are very competitive. Winners will be announced at an awards function at the ANZ Viaduct Events Centre, Auckland, on 6 October.
MTG is also a finalist in the installation category of the national Resene Total Colour Awards for the exhibition Tūturu.
Being selected as a finalist means MTG will win either a Resene Ton-e (winner of category) or a Resene Colour Maestro award (runner up). MTG is the only museum amongst the 24 finalists.
The awards event will be on the evening of 30 August, in conjunction with New Zealand Fashion Week at the ANZ Viaduct Events Centre.
“Many of the finalists are high profile architectural companies, so it is great that we have been recognised in this way,” says James. “The exhibition has been developed by MTG and Iwi Toi Kahungunu, led by Sandy Adsett. The result is a contemporary exhibition underpinned by traditional Māori concepts, achieved through colour.”
Tūturu showcases the outstanding talent of both senior and emerging artists with connections to Ngāti Kahungunu. If you haven’t yet seen it, head along to MTG before it closes on Sunday 20 August. Indra’s Bow and A Glimpse of India both close the following Sunday.
