The Hawke’s Bay Museums Foundation Charitable Trust known as the MTG Foundation supports the growth and development of the collections held at MTG Hawke’s Bay, one of New Zealand’s finest and most extensive museum collections.
The MTG Foundation is an avenue for gifts, donations and bequests intended to develop the collection for the benefit of the people of Hawke’s Bay.
For more than 150 years, MTG Hawke’s Bay and its predecessors have played their role as the premier cultural institution in the region. A long history of collecting, exhibition and publication has enlivened discussion and fostered intellectual development. Today MTG Hawke’s Bay is considered one of New Zealand’s leading art galleries and museums.
Those collections, now held in trust for the people of the region by the Hawke’s Bay Museums Trust include extensive fine arts, decorative and applied arts, costume and textile collections and significant collections of regional history including key photographs, manuscripts and archives.
In 1936 Lady Florence McLean’s gift of over 850 items of art, Taonga Maori and Pacific items led to the construction of a new gallery in which to house those treasures. In 1976 Mary Bestall consolidated the bequest of her husband and former gallery director Leo Bestall, by making a generous donation of artworks, creating a trust in order that ‘paintings and other works of art might be purchased for display in the art gallery.’
In the period since, donors large and small have added to that collection through bequests, donations or gifts of items.
In order to maintain this legacy and to see the collection continue to develop as a key regional asset, your support is needed.
You can become one of a long list of Hawke’s Bay people to have contributed to this important regional treasure.
The MTG Hawke’s Bay Founding Patrons are a group of visionary individuals who have committed funds of $5,000 each to support the development of the collections held at MTG prior to the opening of the new facility.
Established in early 2013 the Founding Patrons represent contemporary cultural patronage in Hawke’s Bay. Founding Patrons receive a number of benefits including input into the purchase of new works and will have exclusive access to MTG events including exhibtion previews. Other Patron opportunities are in development.
